2009 HEALTH RESEARCH OPEN DAY
The Foundation's annual Health Research Open Day
was held Sunday 23rd August 2009
1 - 4 pm

This was a rare opportunity to learn more about the wide range of
health research being undertaken in Canterbury.
Medical Research saves lives and the Open Day allows the public a
unique opportunity to look inside the labs and view displays and
equipment and meet the researchers.

1.30pm: “Diet and Cancer. What do we know. What can we do?”
Professor John Potter, Fred Hutchinson Research Centre, Seattle

2.15pm: “Laproscopic or Open Surgery for Bowel Cancer.
Which is best?”
Dr Randall Allardyce, Senior Lecturer in Surgery,
University of Otago, Christchurch

3.15pm: “How the brain functions differently in people suffering from
depression, particularly the elderly”.
Professor Richard Porter, Dept of Psychological Medicine,
University of Otago, Christchurch

LABORATORY VISITS AND DISPLAYS
As usual the laboratory tours were very popular and 4 tours ran throughout
the aftermoon.
20 different displays with researchers present to talk to the public and answer
questions about their current researchprojects being carried out in Canterbury.
