We are very pleased to have Prof. Bill Wilson of the University of Auckland and the Auckland Cancer Society Research Centre as the keynote speaker for the meeting. Prof. Wilson's research focus is on the development of drugs to combat cancer.

A spin-out company based on the research of Professor Wilson and his colleagues has raised NZ$51 million in venture capital to continue its research into potential treatments for cancer. The research looks at targeting cells in malignant solid tumours that are starved of oxygen (hypoxic) and how this characteristic can be exploited to treat the tumour without harming neighbouring healthy cells.

The Canterbury Health Research Conference is a joint initiative of the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation and the HRSC. The aims of the conference are:

1. To provide a high profile forum for the dissemination of quality health research being conducted in the region.

2. To increase communication and cooperation between researchers from different fields and institutions.

3. To share the importance of health research with the public, with funding bodies, and with government.

The inaugural conference was held in 2004. From 2005 it was decided to continue it biennially. Please click on the link below to view the Health Research Conference website
