CMRF Health Research Open Day 2007
There was an extremely good turn out for the Open Day held at the Christchurch Hospital, Christchurch School of Medicine and Health Research Foyer, 1 - 4pm
Many people took the opportunity to view and interact with displays and the chance to talk to Researchers about their Projects.
Three Research Tours ran every 30 minutes through the afternoon and the public were keen to take advantage of the Tours. Many visited the new 3T MRI Scanner at Hagley Radiology and also used for research projects at the Van der Veer Institute under direction of the CMRF Director of MRI, Dr Richard Watts.
The SYFT machine was also popular showing how the machine can detect compounds in the breath. This machine is currently used for research purposes although in the future it is invisaged it will be an exciting diognostic tool which gives instant results.
The Pathology Laboratory Tour was as ever, very popular. CMRF Medical Director, Professor Robin Fraser spoke on the effects smoking has on the lungs and alcohol has on the liver. Professor Fraser has recently appeared on CTV in an "In Depth" series of programmes on Pathology.
| Four talks were also held in the Rolleston Lecture Theatre and all were well attended. The highlight was guest speaker Professor Bill Wilson, from the Auckland Cancer Group who spoke on "New approaches to Cancer Therapy". | Photo: The SYFT Machine is being demonstrated by Dr Jenny Scotter. Using volunteers from one of the tours to blow into the machine, to show how the machine registers the compounds found in peppermints after the volunteer has chewed one. With the results, the researchers were able to determine which brand of peppermint had been eaten. The graph was displayed on a computer screen at the recent Open Day. |
