The Artist
Merv Jerard
I am a self taught artist and have primarily used water colours in my paintings of landscapes and historic buildings. In recent years I have had tuition form Gordon Sharp, who has helped me to build on my own style to portray subjects and impressions. Often paintings within paintings, allowing water to do a lot of the work. Plegine air painting is also very challenging. My paintings are displayed in and around local city cafes and restaurants and I have sold a number of paintings overseas.

Denise Gaffikin: Contemporary New Zealand Artist

My love of art began as a child and I studied art and art history at school. Following a career in mental health nursing I returned to my passion and emerged as a self taught artist and continue to develop and experiment with new techniques and materials

Painting is food for my soul, an inner energy and drive that I have to listen to and follow, and this process is only complete when the finished result is shared with others who love art. I want the viewer to be 'stirred' by a piece of work, to feel a connection and warmth and to have a desire to go back and look at it again and again.

My work is constantly evolving with my current preferred medium being acrylic on canvas, mixed media, metallic finishes and sometimes gold leaf.

I adore the added dimension of texture in my work and love to experiment with different techniques and special effects. The embellishment with metallic finishes adds a third dimension and sometimes I glaze the surface to add further vibrancy to colours. The use of these products and type of application has become known as my "signature"

My subject choice is varied and I find inspiration in all areas of our environment, from a plant, cloud formation, scenery- to a beautiful nude or the emotion stirred by a visual experience of something we encountered.

Many of my landscapes are inspired by the Marlborough Sounds and Banks Peninsula areas, and my use of the cabbage tree and fern give a distinctNew Zealand flavour. However, I don't attach name places to the landscapes as I believe this then enables the viewer to make their own associations of a special place or memory pertinent to them.

I strive to be an artist with a wide range of subject matter and my love of symmetry and more abstract themes is influencing some of my current works.

My first solo exhibition was early in 2005 and was a near sell-out.

Later that year I had a joint exhibition "Expose" at theBryce Gallery, which was also very successful.

In 2005 I also earned the top selling artist title at the Bryce Gallery

In July 2006 I was selected and hosted a studio visit for the "Friends of the Christchurch Art Gallery". That same July, I held a joint exhibition "New Horizons" with a fellow Christchurch artist.

October 2006 I exhibited at "Art in a Garden" Flaxmere and "Celebration of Art"Auckland

I am a member of Artists Alliance.

I exhibit exclusively at the Bryce Gallery in Christchurch and also in galleries in Queenstown, Hanmer, Auckland, Akaroa, and Motueka and now have work in various parts of the world.

'Dancing Waters' - Rangitata River, South Canterbury

Travelling back to Christchurch from Timaru, I decided to take the inland road to see the mountains. In the south, the morning dawned grey and white with low cloud. It had snowed the day before. Further north the skies lightened and there was a nor'wester inland.

Here is a painting! A New Zealand landscape.

There was colour, definition, depth of field, mood, and light shining on the river and the ridges of the mountains. There was still some snow on the stones beside the river.

The calm patches in the river turned to a torrent as the agitated waters danced through the shallow gaps in the riverbed, creating patterns and movement, carving into the banks as it flowed down to the sea.
